The Vivaldi Consort is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1995 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for the music of Antonio Vivaldi. The ensemble is based in the Netherlands and is known for its performances of Baroque music, particularly the works of Vivaldi. The founding members of the Vivaldi Consort were violinist Peter Verrijt, cellist Jaap ter Linden, and harpsichordist Ton Koopman. Verrijt and ter Linden had previously played together in the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, which was also led by Koopman. The three musicians decided to form their own ensemble to focus on the music of Vivaldi, who was a prolific composer of Baroque music. The Vivaldi Consort quickly gained a reputation for its lively and engaging performances of Vivaldi's music. The ensemble's first major performance was at the Utrecht Early Music Festival in 1996, where they played Vivaldi's Four Seasons. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and the ensemble began to receive invitations to perform at other festivals and concert halls throughout Europe. Over the years, the Vivaldi Consort has expanded its repertoire to include other Baroque composers, such as Bach, Handel, and Telemann. The ensemble has also collaborated with other musicians and ensembles, including the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the Academy of Ancient Music. The Vivaldi Consort's main members have changed over the years, but the ensemble has always maintained a core group of musicians who are dedicated to the ensemble's mission of bringing Baroque music to life. In addition to Verrijt, ter Linden, and Koopman, other notable members of the ensemble have included violinist Ryo Terakado, cellist Wouter Moller, and harpsichordist Richard Egarr. One of the highlights of the Vivaldi Consort's career was their performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons at the BBC Proms in 2003. The performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and was later released on CD. The ensemble's interpretation of the piece was praised for its energy and virtuosity, and it helped to cement the Vivaldi Consort's reputation as one of the leading Baroque ensembles in Europe. The Vivaldi Consort has also received numerous awards and accolades for their recordings. Their recording of Vivaldi's Concerti per l'Orchestra di Dresda won the Diapason d'Or award in 2000, and their recording of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Vivaldi Consort is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble has conducted masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and they have also performed in schools and community centers to introduce Baroque music to new audiences. Overall, the Vivaldi Consort is a highly respected and influential ensemble in the world of Baroque music. Their dedication to the music of Vivaldi and other Baroque composers, as well as their virtuosic performances and commitment to education, have made them a beloved and enduring presence in the classical music world.
