IranSussan Deyhim is a renowned Iranian-American composer, vocalist, and performance artist who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1958, Deyhim grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. Her father was a well-known musician and composer, and her mother was a painter and sculptor. From a young age, Deyhim was exposed to a wide range of musical styles, including traditional Persian music, classical Western music, and jazz. Deyhim began her formal training in music at the Tehran Conservatory of Music, where she studied classical voice and piano. She later moved to the United States to pursue her education and career in music. In the early 1980s, Deyhim settled in New York City, where she quickly became involved in the city's vibrant music and arts scene. One of Deyhim's early breakthroughs came in 1986 when she collaborated with composer and musician Richard Horowitz on the soundtrack for the film "The Sheltering Sky." The film, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, was set in North Africa and featured a score that blended traditional Middle Eastern music with Western classical music. Deyhim's haunting vocals and Horowitz's innovative use of electronic instruments helped to create a unique and evocative sound that earned critical acclaim. Following the success of "The Sheltering Sky," Deyhim continued to collaborate with a wide range of musicians and artists. She worked with composer Philip Glass on several projects, including the opera "The Photographer" and the soundtrack for the film "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters." She also collaborated with the Kronos Quartet on the album "Pieces of Africa," which featured contemporary African music. In addition to her work as a composer and vocalist, Deyhim is also known for her innovative performances. She has created several multimedia works that combine music, dance, and visual art. One of her most notable works is "The House is Black," a multimedia performance inspired by the life and work of Iranian poet and filmmaker Forough Farrokhzad. The performance, which premiered in 2005, featured Deyhim's vocals, live musicians, and video projections. Over the course of her career, Deyhim has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to music and the arts. In 2006, she was awarded the prestigious Alpert Award in the Arts, which recognizes outstanding artists in the fields of dance, music, theater, and visual arts. She has also been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation. Today, Deyhim continues to be an active and influential figure in the world of classical music. She has released several albums of her own music, including "Madman of God" and "Shy Angels." She also continues to collaborate with other musicians and artists, and her work continues to inspire and challenge audiences around the world.More....
