The Motor City Brass Quintet is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1982 in Detroit, Michigan. The group is composed of five members who play brass instruments, including two trumpets, a French horn, a trombone, and a tuba. The ensemble has gained a reputation for its dynamic performances and innovative programming, which often includes a mix of classical and contemporary music. The founding members of the Motor City Brass Quintet were all professional musicians who had played together in various orchestras and ensembles in the Detroit area. They decided to form their own group in order to explore the unique sound and repertoire of the brass quintet. The original members of the group were trumpeters David Ammer and John Daniel, French horn player John Rojak, trombonist Randall Hawes, and tuba player Dennis Nulty. Over the years, the Motor City Brass Quintet has undergone some personnel changes, but the group has remained committed to its original mission of showcasing the versatility and beauty of brass instruments. The current members of the ensemble are trumpeters David Ammer and Brian Bowman, French horn player Corbin Wagner, trombonist Kenneth Thompkins, and tuba player Dennis Nulty. One of the highlights of the Motor City Brass Quintet's career was its performance at the 1984 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Denver, Colorado. The group was invited to perform as part of the conference's opening ceremonies, and its performance was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience. This performance helped to establish the Motor City Brass Quintet as one of the premier brass ensembles in the United States. Since then, the Motor City Brass Quintet has performed at numerous festivals, concerts, and other events throughout the United States and abroad. The group has also released several recordings, including "Brass Quintet Favorites" and "Brass Quintet Christmas." These recordings showcase the group's versatility and range, as well as its commitment to exploring new and innovative repertoire. In addition to its performances, the Motor City Brass Quintet has also been recognized for its contributions to the world of classical music. The group has received numerous awards and honors, including the Detroit Music Award for Best Classical Ensemble in 2002 and 2003. The Motor City Brass Quintet has also been featured on several radio and television programs, including NPR's "Performance Today" and PBS's "Great Performances." Despite its many accomplishments, the Motor City Brass Quintet remains committed to its original mission of showcasing the beauty and versatility of brass instruments. The group continues to perform and record new and innovative repertoire, and it remains one of the most respected and admired brass ensembles in the world of classical music.
