He was the son of a composer and conductor, Frantisek Korte, who was also a professor at the Prague Conservatory. Korte grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. He later studied composition at the Prague Conservatory and the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. During World War II, Korte was forced to flee Czechoslovakia due to the Nazi occupation. He eventually settled in the United States, where he continued his studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He later earned a master's degree in composition from the University of Michigan. Korte's early works were heavily influenced by his Czech heritage, and he often incorporated folk melodies and rhythms into his compositions. One of his most famous early works is his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1953. The symphony is a tribute to Korte's homeland and features a prominent use of Czech folk melodies. In the 1960s, Korte began to experiment with more avant-garde styles of composition, incorporating elements of serialism and atonality into his works. One of his most famous works from this period is his String Quartet No. 2, which was premiered by the Juilliard String Quartet in 1965. The quartet is a complex and challenging work that showcases Korte's mastery of modernist techniques. Despite his experimentation with modernist styles, Korte never completely abandoned his roots in traditional classical music. He continued to compose works that incorporated elements of tonality and melody, and his later works often featured a fusion of modernist and traditional styles. One of his most famous later works is his Symphony No. 3, which was premiered by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1980. The symphony is a powerful and emotional work that showcases Korte's ability to blend modernist and traditional styles into a cohesive whole. Throughout his career, Korte was recognized as one of the leading composers of his generation. He received numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. He was also a prolific composer, with over 200 works to his name, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and vocal works. Korte passed away on January 21, 2019, at the age of 92. His legacy as a composer continues to live on through his music, which is still performed and celebrated by musicians and audiences around the world.More....
