Born on November 23, 1908, in Munich, Germany, Bilgram was the daughter of a prominent music teacher, who recognized her talent at a young age and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Bilgram began her musical training at the age of six, studying piano and organ under the guidance of her father. She later went on to study harpsichord with the renowned German harpsichordist, Hedwig Kirschner, and continued her studies at the Munich Conservatory, where she received a diploma in organ performance. Bilgram's career as a professional musician began in the 1930s, when she started performing in concerts and recitals across Germany. Her exceptional skills as a harpsichordist and organist quickly gained her recognition, and she soon became one of the most sought-after musicians in the country. In 1937, Bilgram was appointed as the organist at the St. Michael's Church in Munich, a position she held for over 30 years. During her tenure at the church, she became known for her exceptional performances and recordings of Bach's organ works, which earned her critical acclaim and a loyal following of fans. Bilgram's career as a performer and recording artist continued to flourish throughout the 1950s and 1960s, as she toured extensively across Europe and the United States, performing in some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals in the world. She also recorded numerous albums, including several acclaimed recordings of Bach's harpsichord and organ works. In addition to her career as a performer, Bilgram was also a respected music educator, teaching at the Munich Conservatory and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. She was known for her dedication to her students and her innovative teaching methods, which emphasized the importance of historical performance practices and the use of period instruments. Bilgram's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1968, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, one of the country's highest civilian honors. She was also awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1978 and the Order of Merit of the State of Bavaria in 1988. Despite her many accomplishments, Bilgram remained humble and dedicated to her craft throughout her life.
