The National Youth Choir of Wales (NYCW) is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over three decades. The choir was founded in 1985 by Geraint Bowen, who served as its conductor until 2015. Since then, the choir has been led by Eilir Owen Griffiths, who has continued to build on the choir's legacy of excellence. The NYCW was established with the aim of providing young Welsh singers with the opportunity to develop their musical talents and perform at the highest level. The choir is made up of singers aged between 16 and 22, who are selected through a rigorous audition process. The choir's members come from all over Wales, and they are united by their passion for music and their commitment to excellence. Over the years, the NYCW has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House, and Carnegie Hall in New York. The choir has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and orchestras, including Sir Simon Rattle, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. One of the highlights of the NYCW's career was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The choir performed the Welsh national anthem, "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau," to a global audience of millions, and their performance was widely praised for its beauty and power. The NYCW has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2012, the choir was awarded the prestigious Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, which recognizes outstanding contributions made by volunteer groups to their local communities.
