Sonoro is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2016 in the United Kingdom. The group is made up of 18 professional singers who are dedicated to performing a wide range of choral music, from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works. The group has quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional musicianship and their ability to connect with audiences through their performances. The birth of Sonoro can be traced back to the vision of its founder, Neil Ferris. Ferris is a highly respected conductor and choral director who has worked with some of the world's leading orchestras and choirs. He wanted to create a new ensemble that would bring together some of the best young singers in the UK and give them the opportunity to perform a wide range of choral music at the highest level. Ferris began by auditioning singers from across the UK, looking for those who had the technical ability, musicality, and passion to be part of a world-class ensemble. He was looking for singers who could work together as a team, who were committed to excellence, and who were willing to take risks and explore new musical territory. After several rounds of auditions, Ferris selected 18 singers to be part of the inaugural Sonoro ensemble. The group included singers from some of the UK's leading choirs, including the BBC Singers, The Sixteen, and Tenebrae. Ferris was excited about the potential of this group of singers and began working with them to develop their sound and their repertoire. One of the early highlights of Sonoro's career was their debut performance at the St. James's Church in London in December 2016. The group performed a program of Christmas music, including works by Bach, Handel, and Britten. The concert was a huge success, with the audience responding enthusiastically to the group's beautiful sound and their engaging performance style. Since then, Sonoro has gone on to perform at some of the UK's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Festival Hall, St. John's Smith Square, and the Wigmore Hall. They have also performed at several major music festivals, including the Cheltenham Music Festival and the Three Choirs Festival. One of the highlights of Sonoro's career so far was their performance at the BBC Proms in 2018. The group performed a program of choral music by British composers, including works by Vaughan Williams, Britten, and Tippett. The concert was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and was widely praised for its exceptional musicianship and the group's ability to connect with the audience. Sonoro has also been recognized for their outstanding performances with several awards and nominations. In 2018, the group was nominated for a Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award in the category of Ensemble. The award recognizes outstanding achievements in classical music and is one of the most prestigious awards in the UK music industry. In addition to their performances, Sonoro is also committed to education and outreach. The group has worked with several schools and community groups to introduce young people to choral music and to inspire the next generation of singers. They have also led several workshops and masterclasses for aspiring singers and conductors. Looking to the future, Sonoro has several exciting projects in the works. They are currently working on a new album of choral music, which will feature works by British composers.
