He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Huff showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He later learned to play the cello and the violin. Huff attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied composition under the tutelage of renowned composers such as John Corigliano and Christopher Rouse. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2007 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the Yale School of Music. During his time at Yale, Huff's compositions began to gain recognition, and he was awarded the Charles Ives Scholarship, which is given to outstanding composers. He also won the Yale Philharmonia Composition Competition, which led to the premiere of his orchestral work, "Symphony No. 1," by the Yale Philharmonia in 2009. Huff's music is characterized by its emotional depth and complexity. He draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, including literature, art, and nature. His compositions often feature intricate harmonies and rhythms, as well as unconventional instrumentation. One of Huff's most notable works is his "Piano Concerto," which was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and premiered in 2012. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the solo piano, with the orchestra providing a rich and colorful backdrop. The piece has been praised for its inventive use of harmony and rhythm, as well as its emotional intensity. Another significant work by Huff is his "String Quartet No. 1," which was premiered by the Kronos Quartet in 2014. The quartet is a haunting and atmospheric piece that explores the expressive possibilities of the string quartet. It has been described as a "tour de force of contemporary chamber music." Huff's music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Rome Prize and the Guggenheim Fellowship. In addition to his work as a composer, Huff is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught composition at the Juilliard School, the Yale School of Music, and the Curtis Institute of Music. He is known for his ability to inspire and challenge his students, and many of them have gone on to successful careers as composers. Sadly, Will Huff passed away on June 15, 2020, at the age of 35. His death was a great loss to the world of classical music, but his legacy lives on through his music and the many students he inspired. His compositions continue to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences around the world, and his influence on contemporary classical music will be felt for many years to come.More....
