She was the daughter of a prominent Haitian family, and her father was a well-known physician. From a young age, Benoit showed a keen interest in music, and her parents encouraged her to pursue her passion. Benoit began her musical training at the age of six, studying piano with her mother. She later studied with several renowned teachers, including Nadia Boulanger in Paris and Rosina Lhévinne in New York. She also studied voice with the famous soprano Lotte Lehmann. Benoit made her debut as a pianist in 1942, performing with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in Paris. She quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile musician, and she went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her work as a pianist, Benoit was also an accomplished singer. She made her debut as a soprano in 1950, performing in a production of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She went on to perform in many other operas, including "La Bohème," "Carmen," and "Don Giovanni." Benoit was known for her powerful and expressive performances, and she was praised for her ability to convey the emotional depth of the music she played. She was also known for her dedication to promoting classical music in Haiti, and she worked tirelessly to bring music education to young people in her home country. Throughout her career, Benoit received many awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1953, she was awarded the Prix de Rome, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. She was also awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government in recognition of her contributions to music. Benoit continued to perform and teach until her death in 1998.
