Frøydis Ree Wekre is a renowned Norwegian French horn player and educator, known for her exceptional musicianship and dedication to the art of classical music. Born on May 16, 1947, in Oslo, Norway, Wekre grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist, and they encouraged her to pursue music as a career. Wekre began playing the French horn at the age of 12 and quickly showed promise as a musician. She studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, where she received her diploma in 1969. She then went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, Germany, where she received her soloist diploma in 1972. Wekre's career as a professional musician began in 1972 when she joined the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra as a French horn player. She quickly established herself as one of the leading French horn players in Norway and was soon invited to perform with other orchestras and ensembles around the world. In 1976, Wekre joined the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra as principal French horn player, a position she held for 20 years. During her time with the orchestra, she also taught at the Grieg Academy of Music in Bergen, where she inspired and mentored many young musicians. Wekre's talent as a French horn player was recognized early on in her career, and she has received numerous awards and accolades for her performances. In 1974, she won first prize at the International Horn Competition in Munich, Germany, and in 1976, she won the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich. Wekre has also been a sought-after soloist and chamber musician, performing with some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles. She has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic, among others. In addition to her career as a performer, Wekre has also been a dedicated educator. She has taught at the Norwegian Academy of Music, the Grieg Academy of Music, and the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, Germany. She has also given masterclasses and workshops around the world, inspiring and mentoring young musicians. Wekre's dedication to the art of classical music has earned her many honors and awards. In 1998, she was awarded the King's Medal of Merit in gold by King Harald V of Norway for her contributions to Norwegian music. In 2006, she was awarded the Lindeman Prize, Norway's highest musical honor. Wekre's legacy as a musician and educator continues to inspire and influence generations of musicians.
