Esther Sialm was a Swiss classical music artist who was born on December 22, 1922, in Zurich, Switzerland. She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist, so it was no surprise that Esther developed an interest in music at a young age. Esther began her musical education at the Zurich Conservatory, where she studied piano and voice. She was a talented student and quickly gained recognition for her musical abilities. In 1942, she made her debut as a soloist with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major. After completing her studies at the Zurich Conservatory, Esther continued her education at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. There, she studied with renowned vocal coach and conductor, Karl Böhm. Under his guidance, Esther honed her skills as a singer and developed a deep understanding of the music of Mozart and other classical composers. In 1947, Esther made her debut at the Salzburg Festival, performing the role of Barbarina in Mozart's opera, The Marriage of Figaro. Her performance was well-received, and she was praised for her clear, pure voice and her ability to convey emotion through her singing. Over the next few years, Esther continued to perform in operas and concerts throughout Europe. She was particularly known for her interpretations of Mozart's music, and she became a sought-after performer in the classical music world. In 1951, Esther made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, performing the role of Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni. Her performance was a great success, and she was praised for her beautiful voice and her ability to bring depth and nuance to her character. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Esther continued to perform in operas and concerts around the world. She was particularly known for her performances of Mozart's music, but she also sang works by other composers, including Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms. In 1963, Esther was awarded the title of Kammersängerin by the Austrian government. This title is given to singers who have made significant contributions to the world of classical music, and it is a great honor in the classical music world. Esther continued to perform well into her 70s, and she remained a beloved figure in the classical music world until her death in 2011 at the age of 88.
