His father was a jazz pianist and his mother was a classical pianist, which exposed him to a wide range of musical genres from a young age. Elphick began playing the double bass at the age of 14 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He went on to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1982. During his time at the conservatory, Elphick studied under some of the most respected double bassists in Australia, including Max McBride and Kees Boersma. After completing his studies, Elphick began performing with various orchestras and ensembles in Australia. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and versatile musician, capable of playing a wide range of musical styles. In addition to his work as a classical musician, Elphick also began exploring jazz and improvisational music, which would later become a major influence on his own compositions. In 1990, Elphick was invited to join the Australian Chamber Orchestra, one of the most prestigious classical ensembles in the country.
