Born on December 2, 1949, in Texas, Raines grew up in Oklahoma City, where he developed a passion for music at a young age. He began singing in church choirs and school musicals, and his talent was soon recognized by his teachers and peers. Raines attended Oklahoma City University, where he studied voice and music theory. He later moved to New York City to pursue a career in opera and musical theater. He made his professional debut in 1975, playing the role of Tony in the Broadway production of "West Side Story." This was followed by several other successful performances in musicals such as "Chicago," "Show Boat," and "Annie." In addition to his work in musical theater, Raines also established himself as a prominent opera singer. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1985, playing the role of Eisenstein in "Die Fledermaus." He went on to perform in several other productions at the Met, including "La Traviata," "The Barber of Seville," and "Don Giovanni." Raines has also performed with many other opera companies around the world, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Paris Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. He has worked with some of the most renowned conductors and directors in the industry, including James Levine, Plácido Domingo, and Franco Zeffirelli. One of Raines' most notable performances was in the 2009 Broadway revival of "Finian's Rainbow," in which he played the lead role of Senator Rawkins. His performance was widely praised by critics, and he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. He also won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for his performance in the same production. Raines has also received numerous other awards and honors throughout his career. In 1993, he was awarded the Richard Tucker Award, which is given annually to an outstanding American opera singer.
