The Alkan Trio is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1989 in London, England. The trio is named after the French composer and pianist Charles-Valentin Alkan, who was known for his virtuosic piano compositions. The founding members of the Alkan Trio were violinist Thomas Bowes, cellist Alexander Baillie, and pianist John Thwaites. All three musicians were accomplished soloists in their own right, but they came together to form the Alkan Trio with the goal of exploring the chamber music repertoire and performing lesser-known works by composers such as Alkan, Saint-Saëns, and Fauré. The Alkan Trio quickly gained a reputation for their dynamic and expressive performances, and they were soon invited to perform at major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe and the United States.
