Modernmedieval is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2013 by Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek, Martha Cluver, and Eliza Bagg. The group is known for its unique blend of medieval and contemporary music, and has gained critical acclaim for its innovative approach to classical music. Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek is a mezzo-soprano who has performed with some of the world's most renowned ensembles, including the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth. Martha Cluver is a soprano who has performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, among others. Eliza Bagg is a soprano who has performed with the American Symphony Orchestra and the New York City Opera. The three women met while performing with the renowned early music ensemble Anonymous 4, and decided to form their own group to explore the intersection of medieval and contemporary music. They named the ensemble Modernmedieval to reflect their commitment to bridging the gap between the past and the present. Since its founding, Modernmedieval has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The group has also collaborated with a wide range of composers and musicians, including Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw and the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth. One of the highlights of Modernmedieval's career was its performance at the 2019 Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee. The festival is known for its eclectic mix of music, and Modernmedieval's performance was a standout for its unique blend of medieval and contemporary music. The group performed a program of works by Caroline Shaw, David Lang, and others, and received a standing ovation from the audience. Modernmedieval has also received critical acclaim for its recordings. The group's debut album, "The Living Word," was released in 2018 and features works by Hildegard von Bingen, Pérotin, and other medieval composers, as well as contemporary works by Caroline Shaw and David Lang. The album was praised for its "exquisite singing" and "imaginative programming" by The New York Times. In addition to its performances and recordings, Modernmedieval is committed to education and outreach. The group has conducted workshops and masterclasses for students and young musicians, and has worked with organizations such as the New York City Department of Education and the Young People's Chorus of New York City to bring classical music to a wider audience. Modernmedieval has received numerous awards and honors for its work. In 2019, the group was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support its upcoming album, "The Blossoming Vine," which features works by Hildegard von Bingen and other medieval composers. The group has also been nominated for a Grammy Award for its recording of Caroline Shaw's "Partita for 8 Voices" with Roomful of Teeth. Overall, Modernmedieval is a unique and innovative ensemble that is pushing the boundaries of classical music. With its blend of medieval and contemporary music, the group is attracting new audiences and inspiring a new generation of musicians.
