The Eastman-Dryden Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1924 by George Eastman and Arthur Dryden. The orchestra is based in Rochester, New York, and is affiliated with the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. George Eastman was a prominent businessman and philanthropist who founded the Eastman Kodak Company. He was also a passionate music lover and supporter of the arts. Arthur Dryden was a conductor and music educator who had previously served as the director of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. The Eastman-Dryden Orchestra was established with the goal of providing high-quality classical music performances to the Rochester community. The orchestra's first concert was held on November 4, 1924, and featured works by Beethoven, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky. Over the years, the Eastman-Dryden Orchestra has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Howard Hanson, David Effron, and Neil Varon. The orchestra has also featured many notable soloists, including pianist Vladimir Horowitz, violinist Isaac Stern, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the highlights of the Eastman-Dryden Orchestra's history was its performance at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy in 1961. The orchestra was invited to perform at the inaugural concert, which was held at the National Guard Armory in Washington, D.C. The orchestra performed works by American composers, including Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" and Leonard Bernstein's "Symphonic Dances from West Side Story." The Eastman-Dryden Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1957, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious Ditson Conductor's Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to American music. The orchestra has also been recognized for its recordings, including a Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance - Orchestra in 1980 for its recording of Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 4. In addition to its performances in Rochester and around the United States, the Eastman-Dryden Orchestra has also toured internationally. The orchestra has performed in Europe, Asia, and South America, and has been praised for its technical precision and musicality. Today, the Eastman-Dryden Orchestra continues to be a vital part of the Rochester music scene. The orchestra performs regularly at the Eastman Theatre, and also collaborates with other local arts organizations, including the Rochester City Ballet and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra's commitment to excellence and its dedication to bringing classical music to new audiences ensure that it will remain a beloved institution for years to come.
