He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a pianist and his mother was a violinist. From a young age, Morgan was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Morgan's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition under the tutelage of renowned composer, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. During his time at the academy, Morgan developed a deep appreciation for the works of composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. After completing his studies, Morgan began his career as a composer. His early works were heavily influenced by the classical composers he had studied, but he soon began to develop his own unique style. His music was characterized by its intricate harmonies, complex rhythms, and use of unconventional instruments. One of Morgan's early works, "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," was premiered in 1975 by the London Symphony Orchestra. The piece was well-received by critics and established Morgan as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the next few years, Morgan continued to compose and his works were performed by orchestras around the world. In 1982, Morgan was commissioned by the Royal Opera House in London to compose an opera. The resulting work, "The Tempest," was based on the play by William Shakespeare. The opera was a critical and commercial success and cemented Morgan's reputation as one of the leading composers of his generation. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Morgan continued to compose and his works were performed by some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also began to experiment with electronic music, incorporating synthesizers and other electronic instruments into his compositions. One of Morgan's most notable works from this period was "Symphony No. 5," which was premiered in 1995 by the London Symphony Orchestra. The piece was inspired by the natural world and featured a complex interplay of rhythms and melodies. It was hailed as a masterpiece by critics and audiences alike. In the early 2000s, Morgan's health began to decline and he was forced to reduce his workload. However, he continued to compose and his works continued to be performed by orchestras around the world. In 2008, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to classical music. David Morgan passed away on June 15, 2010, at the age of 60. He left behind a legacy of innovative and groundbreaking compositions that continue to inspire and captivate audiences today.
