Otonowa Wind Symphonica is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2015 by Japanese pianist and composer, Meg Okura. The ensemble is known for its unique blend of classical music and jazz, and its ability to create a sound that is both traditional and modern. The idea for Otonowa Wind Symphonica came to Meg Okura after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. She wanted to create a musical project that would bring hope and healing to the people affected by the disaster. She gathered a group of musicians from different backgrounds and formed the ensemble. The main members of Otonowa Wind Symphonica include Meg Okura on violin and piano, Sam Newsome on soprano saxophone, Brian Marsella on piano, Pablo Aslan on bass, and Jared Schonig on drums. The ensemble also features guest musicians from time to time. Otonowa Wind Symphonica has performed at various venues and festivals around the world, including the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the Tokyo Jazz Festival in Japan. The ensemble has also collaborated with other musicians and artists, such as the Japanese drumming group, Kodo, and the visual artist, Kanae Ito. One of the highlights of Otonowa Wind Symphonica's performances was their concert at the Blue Note Jazz Club in 2016. The ensemble performed a mix of classical and jazz pieces, including Meg Okura's original compositions. The concert received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. In 2017, Otonowa Wind Symphonica released their debut album, "Otonowa." The album features a mix of classical and jazz pieces, as well as Meg Okura's original compositions. The album received critical acclaim and was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album category. Otonowa Wind Symphonica has also received other awards and recognition for their work. In 2018, the ensemble was awarded the Japan Foundation President's Prize for their contribution to cultural exchange between Japan and the United States. The ensemble was also named the Best Jazz Group at the 2019 Hot House Jazz Awards. In addition to their performances and recordings, Otonowa Wind Symphonica is also involved in educational outreach programs. The ensemble has conducted workshops and masterclasses for students of all ages, and has worked with organizations such as the Jazz at Lincoln Center's Jazz for Young People program.
