He was born in Nivelles, Belgium, in 1435, and his family was involved in the cloth trade. Tinctoris received his early education in Nivelles and later studied at the University of Orléans, where he earned a degree in law. Tinctoris's interest in music led him to study with the renowned composer Johannes Ockeghem in Paris. He also studied with other prominent musicians of the time, including Guillaume Dufay and Gilles Binchois. Tinctoris's musical education was extensive, and he became a skilled composer and music theorist. In 1477, Tinctoris was appointed as a chaplain and singer at the court of Ferdinand I of Naples. He remained in Naples for several years, during which time he composed many works for the court. Tinctoris's compositions were highly regarded, and he was considered one of the leading composers of his time. Tinctoris's music was characterized by its complexity and sophistication. He was known for his use of intricate polyphonic textures and his skillful handling of harmony.
