He was born on August 12, 1924, in Vienna, Austria, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Ortenberg showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Ortenberg's family fled Austria in 1938 due to the Nazi occupation, and they settled in the United States. Ortenberg continued his music education in the US and studied at the Juilliard School in New York City. He also studied with renowned pianist and teacher Rosina Lhévinne. Ortenberg made his debut as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic in 1944, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. This performance was a significant milestone in his career and marked the beginning of his rise to fame. Over the years, Ortenberg performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. Ortenberg was also a prolific recording artist, and his recordings of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann are considered some of the finest interpretations of these composers' music.
