Benoît Wéry is a Belgian classical pianist and composer who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and innovative compositions. Born on May 22, 1974, in Brussels, Belgium, Wéry showed an early aptitude for music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he received his diploma in piano performance with distinction in 1996. Wéry's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most promising young musicians in Belgium. He won several prestigious awards and competitions, including the First Prize at the International Piano Competition of Ettlingen in Germany in 1995, and the First Prize at the International Piano Competition of Epinal in France in 1996. After completing his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Wéry continued his musical education at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hanover, Germany, where he studied with the renowned pianist and pedagogue Karl-Heinz Kämmerling. He also took masterclasses with other distinguished pianists, including Murray Perahia, András Schiff, and Maria João Pires. Wéry's career as a concert pianist took off in the late 1990s, and he quickly established himself as one of the leading pianists of his generation. He has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. Wéry's repertoire is wide-ranging and includes works by classical composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin, as well as contemporary composers such as Ligeti, Messiaen, and Boulez. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Franz Liszt, and has recorded several albums of Liszt's piano music, including the complete Transcendental Etudes. In addition to his career as a pianist, Wéry is also an accomplished composer. He has written works for solo piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra, and his music has been performed by leading musicians and ensembles around the world. In 2001, he was awarded the Prix de la Fondation de France, which recognizes outstanding young artists in various fields. He has also been awarded the Prix de la Ville de Paris, the Prix de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts, and the Prix de la Fondation Simone et Cino Del Duca.
