Role:Composer ConductorBirth:1935Period:ContemporaryGenre:OrchestralJordi Cervelló is a Spanish composer of classical music, born on December 28, 1955, in Barcelona, Spain. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Cervelló showed a great interest in music and began studying piano and composition at the age of six. Cervelló's musical education continued at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona, where he studied composition with Joan Guinjoan and piano with Albert Attenelle. He later went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna, Austria, where he studied with Friedrich Cerha and Roman Haubenstock-Ramati. Cervelló's early works were heavily influenced by the avant-garde music of the 20th century, particularly the works of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. However, he soon began to develop his own unique style, which combined elements of traditional tonality with modernist techniques. One of Cervelló's early works, "Tres Poemas de Federico García Lorca" (Three Poems by Federico García Lorca), for soprano and piano, was premiered in 1981 and received critical acclaim. The work showcases Cervelló's ability to create a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere through his use of dissonance and unconventional harmonies. In the 1990s, Cervelló began to incorporate elements of Spanish folk music into his compositions, which added a new dimension to his already eclectic style. One of his most notable works from this period is "Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra," which was premiered in 1995 and has since become a staple of the guitar repertoire. Cervelló's music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Ensemble Intercontemporain. He has also received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the National Music Prize of Catalonia in 2006. In addition to his work as a composer, Cervelló is also a respected musicologist and has written extensively on the music of the 20th century. He has published several books on the subject, including "La música del siglo XX" (The Music of the 20th Century) and "La música en la cultura contemporánea" (Music in Contemporary Culture). Cervelló's music continues to be performed and admired by audiences around the world. His unique blend of traditional tonality and modernist techniques, combined with his incorporation of Spanish folk music, has made him one of the most important composers of his generation.More....
