CubaBirth:1888Death:1945Genre:ChoralOperaMoisés Simóns was a Cuban composer and pianist who lived from 1889 to 1945. He was born in Havana, Cuba, and showed an early interest in music. His father was a musician, and Moisés began studying piano with him at a young age. He also studied with other teachers in Havana, including the renowned pianist and composer Ignacio Cervantes. As a young man, Simóns began performing in public, both as a solo pianist and as an accompanist for singers. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented musician, and his compositions began to be performed by other musicians as well. In 1912, he wrote his most famous song, "El Manisero" (The Peanut Vendor), which became a hit in Cuba and later in the United States. Simóns continued to compose throughout his life, writing music for both piano and voice. His style was influenced by Cuban folk music, as well as by European classical music. He was particularly interested in the rhythms and melodies of Afro-Cuban music, and incorporated these elements into many of his compositions. One of Simóns' most famous works is his "Suite Cubana," which was written for piano in 1920. The suite consists of six movements, each of which is based on a different Cuban dance or folk song. The first movement, "Danza Negra," is a lively dance in 6/8 time, while the second movement, "Danza de los Ñáñigos," is a slower, more contemplative piece. The third movement, "Danza Lucumí," is based on a Yoruba folk song, and features complex rhythms and syncopation. The fourth movement, "Danza de los Congos," is a fast, energetic dance, while the fifth movement, "Danza de los Festejos," is a more relaxed, celebratory piece. The final movement, "Danza de los Amorosos," is a romantic waltz. Another notable work by Simóns is his "Canción de Cuna" (Lullaby), which was written for voice and piano in 1928. The song is a gentle, soothing lullaby, with a simple melody and a repetitive accompaniment. It has become one of the most famous Cuban songs of all time, and has been recorded by many different artists. In addition to his compositions, Simóns was also a respected pianist and accompanist. He performed frequently in Havana, both as a soloist and as an accompanist for singers and other musicians. He was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to improvise on the piano. Simóns' career was cut short by his untimely death in 1945, at the age of 56. However, his music has continued to be performed and recorded by musicians around the world. His influence can be heard in the music of many other Cuban composers, as well as in the work of musicians in other genres, such as jazz and pop. Overall, Moisés Simóns was a talented and influential composer who helped to shape the sound of Cuban music in the early 20th century. His compositions continue to be celebrated for their beauty, their complexity, and their unique blend of Cuban and European musical traditions.More....
