Donovan Leitch, born on May 10, 1946, in Glasgow, Scotland, is a Scottish singer, songwriter, and guitarist who is known for his contributions to the folk rock and psychedelic rock genres. He is also a composer of classical music, having written several pieces for orchestra and chamber ensembles. Leitch grew up in a musical family, with his father being a traditional Scottish musician and his mother a singer. He began playing guitar at the age of 14 and was soon performing in local folk clubs. In 1964, he moved to London and began performing in coffeehouses and clubs, where he was discovered by producer Mickie Most. Leitch's first hit single, "Catch the Wind," was released in 1965 and became a top ten hit in the UK and the US. He went on to release several more successful singles, including "Colours," "Sunshine Superman," and "Mellow Yellow." His music was known for its poetic lyrics and psychedelic sound, which was influenced by his interest in Eastern mysticism and psychedelic drugs. In the late 1960s, Leitch began to explore classical music, studying with composer John Cameron and attending the Royal Academy of Music in London. He wrote his first classical piece, "Hurdy Gurdy Man," in 1968, which was later arranged for orchestra by John Cameron. Leitch's classical compositions are characterized by their use of traditional Scottish and Celtic melodies, as well as their incorporation of Eastern and Middle Eastern musical elements. His works include "Sutras," a suite for orchestra and choir based on the teachings of the Buddha, and "Lady of the Stars," a concerto for guitar and orchestra. In addition to his classical compositions, Leitch has continued to write and perform folk and rock music. He has collaborated with several musicians, including Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Paul McCartney. He has also been involved in various humanitarian and environmental causes, including the anti-nuclear movement and the protection of rainforests. Leitch's contributions to music have been recognized with several awards and honors, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. His music continues to inspire and influence musicians and fans around the world.
