Role:ComposerBirth:1933Death:1984Antoni Matheu was a Spanish composer born on January 17, 1853, in the city of Barcelona. He was the son of a music teacher, and from a young age, he showed a great interest in music. His father recognized his talent and began teaching him music theory and piano. Antoni quickly became proficient in both and began composing his own music at the age of 12. At the age of 18, Antoni moved to Madrid to study music at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He studied under some of the most prominent composers of the time, including Francisco Asenjo Barbieri and Emilio Arrieta. During his time at the conservatory, Antoni composed several pieces, including his first opera, "La Venganza de Don Mendo," which was well-received by audiences. After completing his studies, Antoni returned to Barcelona, where he began working as a music teacher. He also continued to compose music, and his works began to gain recognition throughout Spain. In 1881, he was appointed the director of the Municipal Band of Barcelona, a position he held for over 20 years. During his time as the director of the Municipal Band, Antoni composed several pieces for the band, including "El Himno de Barcelona," which became the official anthem of the city. He also composed several operas, including "La Reina Mora," which was performed at the Teatro Real in Madrid in 1893. Antoni's music was heavily influenced by Spanish folk music, and he often incorporated traditional Spanish melodies and rhythms into his compositions. His music was also influenced by the works of other composers, including Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi. One of Antoni's most famous works is his opera "El Gato Montés," which premiered in 1916. The opera tells the story of a bullfighter who falls in love with a gypsy woman. The opera was a huge success and is still performed today. Antoni continued to compose music until his death on December 14, 1911. His legacy as a composer and music educator lives on, and his works continue to be performed and studied by musicians around the world.More....
