Role:ComposerPeriod:ModernGenre:OrchestralSymphonyHermann Suter was a Swiss composer and conductor who was born on May 28, 1870, in Kaiserstuhl, Switzerland. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Suter began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and violin with his father. He later studied composition with Friedrich Hegar at the Zurich Conservatory. Suter's early compositions were influenced by the Romantic style of the time, but he later developed his own unique style that incorporated elements of folk music and modernism. He was particularly interested in the music of Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler, and their influence can be heard in many of his works. In 1892, Suter was appointed as the conductor of the Basel Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for 25 years. During his tenure, he transformed the orchestra into one of the finest in Switzerland and established a reputation as a skilled conductor. Suter's most famous work is his oratorio "Le Laudi," which he composed in 1916. The piece is based on the writings of St. Francis of Assisi and is considered one of the greatest choral works of the 20th century. "Le Laudi" was premiered in Zurich in 1917 and was an immediate success. It has since been performed all over the world and is still considered one of Suter's greatest achievements. In addition to "Le Laudi," Suter composed a number of other choral works, including "Das Hohe Lied" and "Die Sieben Todsünden." He also wrote several operas, including "Die schwarze Spinne" and "Le Roi David," as well as numerous orchestral works and chamber music pieces. Suter was a prolific composer throughout his life, and his works were well-received by audiences and critics alike. He was awarded numerous honors and awards for his contributions to music, including the title of Honorary Doctor of Music from the University of Basel. Suter died on February 17, 1926, in Basel, Switzerland, at the age of 55. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and appreciated by audiences around the world.More....
