Frederick Hemke is a renowned American classical music composer and saxophonist. He was born on July 11, 1935, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Hemke grew up in a musical environment and started playing the saxophone at the age of 12. Hemke's musical education began at the Milwaukee Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Russell Dane, a prominent saxophonist of the time. He later attended Northwestern University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1957. Hemke continued his studies at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied with Marcel Mule, a legendary saxophonist and teacher. Hemke's time in Paris was a turning point in his career, as he was exposed to a new level of musical excellence and was able to refine his skills as a saxophonist. After completing his studies in Paris, Hemke returned to the United States and began his career as a performer and teacher. He joined the faculty of Northwestern University in 1962 and remained there until his retirement in 2003. Hemke's teaching career was highly successful, and he is widely regarded as one of the most influential saxophone teachers of the 20th century. Many of his students have gone on to become successful performers and teachers in their own right. As a performer, Hemke has had a long and distinguished career.
