Maeretha Stewart was born on May 11, 1985, in New York City. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Maeretha showed a natural talent for music and began taking piano lessons at the age of four. As she grew older, Maeretha's love for music continued to flourish, and she began to explore other instruments. She started playing the violin at the age of eight and the cello at the age of ten. By the time she was in high school, Maeretha was proficient in all three instruments and was already performing in local orchestras and chamber groups. After graduating from high school, Maeretha attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied piano, violin, and cello. During her time at Juilliard, Maeretha was a standout student, winning numerous awards and competitions. She also had the opportunity to perform with some of the world's most renowned musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman. After graduating from Juilliard, Maeretha began her professional career as a classical musician. She quickly gained a reputation as a versatile and talented performer, and she was soon in demand as a soloist and chamber musician. Maeretha's performances were praised for their technical precision, emotional depth, and musicality. One of Maeretha's most memorable performances was at the Lincoln Center in New York City. She was the soloist for Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the "Emperor" concerto. The performance was a huge success, and Maeretha received a standing ovation from the audience. Maeretha's talent and hard work were recognized by the music industry, and she received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 2010, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show great potential for a solo career. She was also a recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship, also known as the "genius grant," which is awarded to individuals who have shown exceptional creativity and talent in their field. In addition to her solo performances, Maeretha was also a member of several chamber groups. She was a founding member of the Stewart Trio, which consisted of Maeretha on piano, her father on cello, and her mother on violin. The trio performed together for many years and recorded several albums. Maeretha was also a passionate advocate for music education. She believed that every child should have access to music education and worked tirelessly to promote music education programs in schools. She was a frequent guest speaker at schools and universities, where she would talk about the importance of music education and share her own experiences as a musician. Tragically, Maeretha's career was cut short when she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2015. Despite her illness, Maeretha continued to perform and inspire others with her music. She passed away on June 15, 2017, at the age of 32. Maeretha Stewart was a gifted musician who left an indelible mark on the classical music world. Her talent, passion, and dedication to music continue to inspire musicians and music lovers around the world.
