The group is composed of active-duty members of the United States Air Force and is based at the Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C. The Singing Sergeants was founded in 1945 by Lieutenant Harold E. Clark, who was then the conductor of the U.S. Air Force Band. The group was initially composed of eight members and was known as the "Air Force Chorus." The Singing Sergeants have performed at numerous high-profile events, including presidential inaugurations, state funerals, and major sporting events. The ensemble sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" as the president's casket was carried out of the Capitol building.
