The Singing Sergeants is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over 70 years. The group is composed of active-duty members of the United States Air Force and is based at the Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C. The ensemble is known for its exceptional vocal performances and has received numerous accolades for its contributions to the world of classical music. The Singing Sergeants was founded in 1945 by Lieutenant Harold E. Clark, who was then the conductor of the U.S. Air Force Band. The group was initially composed of eight members and was known as the "Air Force Chorus." Over the years, the ensemble grew in size and reputation, and in 1973, it was renamed the "Singing Sergeants." The Singing Sergeants have performed at numerous high-profile events, including presidential inaugurations, state funerals, and major sporting events. One of the group's most notable performances was at the funeral of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. The ensemble sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" as the president's casket was carried out of the Capitol building. In addition to its performances at major events, the Singing Sergeants have also toured extensively throughout the United States and around the world. In 2010, the Singing Sergeants were awarded the National Medal of Arts, which is the highest honor given to artists and arts patrons by the United States government.
