Ryo Yanagitani is a renowned classical pianist who has captivated audiences around the world with his virtuosic performances and sensitive interpretations of the great works of the piano repertoire. Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1977, Yanagitani began playing the piano at the age of four and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with some of the most distinguished teachers in Japan, including Hiroshi Tamura and Akira Imai, and won numerous competitions and awards as a young pianist. In 1995, Yanagitani moved to Canada to study at the University of British Columbia, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree with honors. He continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received a Master of Music degree and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree. During his time at Juilliard, Yanagitani studied with some of the most renowned pianists and teachers in the world, including Yoheved Kaplinsky, Jerome Lowenthal, and Robert McDonald. Yanagitani's career as a concert pianist began to take off in the early 2000s, when he won several major competitions and began to perform regularly in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls. In 2002, he won the prestigious Montreal International Music Competition, which helped to launch his international career. He has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. One of Yanagitani's most memorable performances was his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 2004, when he performed Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 under the baton of Lorin Maazel. The performance was widely praised for Yanagitani's technical brilliance and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music. Yanagitani has also performed at many of the world's most prestigious music festivals, including the Ravinia Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival. In addition to his career as a concert pianist, Yanagitani is also a dedicated teacher and has taught at several universities and music schools around the world. He has been a faculty member at the University of British Columbia, the Juilliard School, and the Manhattan School of Music, among others. He is known for his patient and supportive teaching style, and many of his students have gone on to successful careers as pianists. Yanagitani has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of Cultural Merit from the Japanese government in 2019. He has also been recognized for his recordings, which include several critically acclaimed albums of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. His recording of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2011.
