The NDR-Sinfonieorchester, also known as the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra, is a classical music ensemble based in Hamburg, Germany. The orchestra was founded in 1945 by the North German Radio (NDR) and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Europe. The NDR-Sinfonieorchester has had many notable conductors throughout its history, including Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, Günter Wand, Christoph Eschenbach, and Alan Gilbert. The current chief conductor is Krzysztof Urbański, who has been with the orchestra since 2019. The orchestra has also had many notable soloists perform with them, including pianists Martha Argerich and Lang Lang, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the highlights of the NDR-Sinfonieorchester's history was their performance at the opening ceremony of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg in 2017. The orchestra performed Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, with soloists and a choir, to a sold-out audience. The NDR-Sinfonieorchester has also won many awards throughout its history, including the Echo Klassik Award for Best Orchestra in 2014 and 2015. They have also been nominated for several Grammy Awards for their recordings. The orchestra has a diverse repertoire, ranging from classical to contemporary music. They have recorded works by composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler, as well as contemporary composers like John Adams and Magnus Lindberg.
