At the Conservatoire, Diémer studied under Antoine François Marmontel, a renowned pianist and teacher. He quickly became one of Marmontel's star pupils and won several prizes for his performances. In 1861, Diémer won the prestigious Prix de Rome, which allowed him to study in Italy for four years. During his time in Italy, Diémer continued to hone his skills as a pianist and composer. He also became interested in the music of Franz Liszt, who was a major influence on his own compositions. Diémer returned to Paris in 1865 and began a successful career as a concert pianist. Diémer quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest pianists of his time. He was known for his technical skill and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and was particularly popular in Russia. One of Diémer's most notable performances was his debut at the Salle Pleyel in Paris in 1866.
