Yumi Kendall is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a cellist. She was born on December 23, 1986, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Her parents were both musicians, and they encouraged her to pursue music from a young age. Yumi started playing the cello when she was just four years old, and she quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Yumi's parents enrolled her in the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia, where she received her early music education. She later attended the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied under renowned cellist Peter Wiley. Yumi graduated from the Curtis Institute in 2008 with a Bachelor of Music degree. After graduating from the Curtis Institute, Yumi began her professional career as a cellist. She quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent and was invited to perform with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras. In 2010, Yumi was appointed as the assistant principal cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the most renowned orchestras in the world. Since joining the Philadelphia Orchestra, Yumi has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonic. She has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Simon Rattle, and Gustavo Dudamel. One of Yumi's most notable performances was her solo debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2014. She performed the cello concerto by Edward Elgar, one of the most challenging pieces in the cello repertoire. Yumi's performance was widely praised by critics, who described it as "mesmerizing" and "spellbinding." The performance was also broadcast on national television, further cementing Yumi's reputation as one of the most talented cellists of her generation. In addition to her work with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Yumi is also an active chamber musician. She has performed with some of the world's most renowned chamber ensembles, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Marlboro Music Festival. Yumi is also a member of the Jasper String Quartet, a critically acclaimed ensemble that has won numerous awards and performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls. Yumi has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 2016, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise for the future. The grant is one of the most prestigious awards in classical music and has been awarded to some of the most renowned musicians in history, including Yo-Yo Ma and Joshua Bell. Yumi is also a passionate advocate for music education. She has worked with numerous organizations to promote music education and has given masterclasses and workshops to young musicians around the world. Yumi believes that music has the power to transform lives and that every child should have access to music education. In addition to her work as a musician, Yumi is also a dedicated mother and wife. She is married to fellow cellist Gabriel Cabezas, and they have two children together.
