John Hilton was a British composer and musician who lived during the 16th and 17th centuries. He was born in Cambridge, England, in 1599, and little is known about his early life and education. However, it is believed that he received his musical training at the University of Cambridge, where he later became a fellow. Hilton's musical career began in the early 1620s when he was appointed as the organist at St. Margaret's Church in Westminster. He held this position for several years before moving on to become the organist at Ely Cathedral in 1626. During his time at Ely, Hilton composed a number of works for the cathedral choir, including anthems, hymns, and psalm settings. In 1636, Hilton left Ely Cathedral and moved to London, where he became the organist at St. Margaret's Church in Westminster once again. He remained in this position until his death in 1657. During his time in London, Hilton became a prominent figure in the city's musical scene, and he was highly regarded as a composer and performer. Hilton's music is characterized by its simplicity and elegance. He was known for his skillful use of counterpoint and his ability to create beautiful melodies. His works were often written for the church, and he composed a number of hymns, anthems, and psalm settings. However, he also wrote secular music, including songs and instrumental pieces. One of Hilton's most famous works is his anthem "Lord, for thy tender mercy's sake." This piece is still performed today and is considered to be one of the finest examples of English church music from the 17th century. Another notable work is his setting of the hymn "All people that on earth do dwell," which is still sung in churches around the world. In addition to his compositions, Hilton was also a skilled performer. He was known for his improvisational skills on the organ, and he was highly regarded as a keyboard player. He also played the viola da gamba, and he composed a number of works for this instrument as well. Despite his success as a composer and performer, Hilton's life was not without its challenges. He lived during a time of great political and religious upheaval in England, and he was forced to navigate the changing political landscape of the country. He was a devout Anglican, and he was often at odds with the Puritan movement that was gaining strength in England during his lifetime. Despite these challenges, Hilton remained committed to his music and his faith. He continued to compose and perform throughout his life, and his music remains an important part of the English choral tradition. Today, he is remembered as one of the great composers of the English Renaissance, and his works continue to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.
