The Czech Philharmonic Sextet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over 60 years. The ensemble was founded in 1964 by six members of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to showcase their talents beyond the confines of the orchestra. The founding members of the Czech Philharmonic Sextet were Josef Vlach (violin), Václav Snítil (violin), Josef Kodousek (viola), Václav Bernášek (cello), Karel Bidlo (clarinet), and František Herman (bassoon). All six musicians were highly accomplished in their respective fields and had already established themselves as leading performers in the Czech Republic. The ensemble's first performance took place in Prague in 1964, and it was an instant success. The audience was captivated by the Sextet's virtuosity, precision, and musicality, and the ensemble quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest chamber music groups in Europe. Over the years, the Czech Philharmonic Sextet has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Musikverein in Vienna. The ensemble has also collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including pianist Rudolf Firkušný, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, and violinist Itzhak Perlman. One of the highlights of the Czech Philharmonic Sextet's career was their performance at the 1968 Edinburgh International Festival. The ensemble's performance of Dvořák's String Sextet in A major was met with rapturous applause, and the Sextet was awarded the festival's prestigious Critics' Prize. The Sextet has also received numerous other awards and accolades throughout their career, including the Czech Music Council's Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement and the Medal of Merit from the Czech Republic's Ministry of Culture. The Czech Philharmonic Sextet has recorded extensively throughout their career, with over 20 albums to their name. Their recordings have received critical acclaim and have been praised for their technical excellence and musical sensitivity. Despite changes in personnel over the years, the Czech Philharmonic Sextet has remained true to their founding principles of excellence in chamber music performance. The current members of the ensemble are Jana Brožková (violin), Vlastimil Mareš (violin), Jiří Ševčík (viola), Václav Bernášek (cello), Jiří Hudec (clarinet), and Jiří Javůrek (bassoon). The Czech Philharmonic Sextet continues to perform regularly, both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Their performances are always eagerly anticipated by audiences and critics alike, and the ensemble's reputation as one of the world's finest chamber music groups shows no signs of diminishing.
