He was the son of a French mother and an Armenian father, who was a well-known composer and conductor. From a young age, Massis showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later went on to study at the Paris Conservatory, where he honed his skills as a pianist and composer. Massis' talent as a pianist was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at the age of 12. He made his debut as a soloist with the Paris Symphony Orchestra at the age of 16, playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. This performance was a huge success, and Massis was praised for his technical skill and musicality. Over the next few years, Massis continued to perform as a soloist with various orchestras in France and other parts of Europe. He also began to compose his own music, and his works were well-received by audiences and critics alike. In 1949, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome, which allowed him to study music in Italy for several years. In the 1950s, Massis' career as a pianist and composer continued to flourish. He performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. He also recorded several albums of his own music, which were highly acclaimed. One of Massis' most memorable performances took place in 1955, when he played Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
