The Cory Band is a world-renowned brass band hailing from the Rhondda Valley in South Wales. The band was founded in 1884 as the Ton Temperance Band, but it wasn't until the 1960s that the band began to gain international recognition under the direction of conductor Major H. A. Kenney. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the band continued to build its reputation, winning numerous national and international competitions. In 1982, the band changed its name to the Cory Band in honor of its longtime president, Sir Clifford Cory. Under the direction of conductor Robert Childs, the Cory Band has continued to thrive, winning countless awards and accolades. In 2000, the band became the first Welsh band to win the European Brass Band Championships, and they have since won the competition four more times. In addition to their success at the European Championships, the Cory Band has also won the British Open Brass Band Championships six times and the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain four times. The band has also had the honor of performing at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and Carnegie Hall in New York City. They have also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned classical musicians, including Bryn Terfel and Alison Balsom. One of the highlights of the Cory Band's career came in 2013 when they were invited to perform at the BBC Proms, a series of concerts held annually at the Royal Albert Hall. The band's performance was met with critical acclaim, and they were invited back to the Proms in 2016. In addition to their success in the classical music world, the Cory Band has also made a name for themselves in the world of film and television. They have recorded music for numerous movies and TV shows, including the Harry Potter series and the BBC's Doctor Who. Despite their success, the Cory Band remains committed to their roots in the Rhondda Valley.
