Frank Perkins was an American composer and arranger who was born on August 6, 1908, in San Francisco, California. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Perkins began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and later studied at the University of California, Berkeley. Perkins began his career as a pianist and arranger for dance bands in the 1920s and 1930s. He worked with some of the most popular bands of the time, including the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra. Perkins also worked as a staff arranger for radio stations in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In the 1940s, Perkins began to focus more on composing his own music. He wrote music for films, television shows, and commercials. One of his most famous compositions was the theme song for the television show "The Adventures of Robin Hood," which aired from 1955 to 1959. The theme song, titled "Robin Hood," became a hit and was later used in the 1993 film "Robin Hood: Men in Tights." Perkins also composed music for several films, including "The Big Circus" (1959), "The Time Travelers" (1964), and "The Green Berets" (1968). He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song "Faraway Part of Town" from the film "Pepe" (1960). In addition to his work in film and television, Perkins composed several classical works. One of his most famous pieces is the "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which was premiered by the San Francisco Symphony in 1950. The concerto is a three-movement work that showcases Perkins' skill as a composer and pianist. The first movement is a lively and energetic piece, while the second movement is more introspective and melancholy. The third movement is a fast and exciting finale that features virtuosic piano passages. Perkins also composed several chamber works, including a string quartet and a sonata for violin and piano.
