He was born on April 15, 1945, in Kill, County Kildare, Ireland. O'Flynn grew up in a musical family, and his father was a fiddle player. He began playing the tin whistle at the age of eight and later learned to play the uilleann pipes. O'Flynn's talent for playing the uilleann pipes was evident from an early age, and he quickly became recognized as one of the most skilled pipers in Ireland. He was a member of the influential Irish traditional music group Planxty, which was formed in 1972. The group consisted of O'Flynn, Christy Moore, Andy Irvine, and Donal Lunny. Planxty was instrumental in the revival of traditional Irish music in the 1970s and helped to bring it to a wider audience. O'Flynn's playing was characterized by his technical skill and his ability to convey emotion through his music. He was known for his use of ornamentation and his ability to create complex melodies. His playing was also marked by his use of drones, which gave his music a distinctive sound. In addition to his work with Planxty, O'Flynn was a sought-after session musician and collaborated with many other musicians throughout his career. He played on albums by artists such as Kate Bush, Enya, and Mark Knopfler. He also composed music for film and television, including the soundtrack for the 1995 film Rob Roy. O'Flynn's solo career was also highly successful. He released several albums, including The Piper's Call, The Given Note, and Out to an Other Side. His music was critically acclaimed and won numerous awards, including the National Entertainment Award for Traditional Music in 1985 and the Gradam Ceoil Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. One of O'Flynn's most memorable performances was at the funeral of Irish poet Seamus Heaney in 2013. He played a haunting rendition of the air "Port na bPucai" as Heaney's coffin was carried into the church. The performance was widely praised and became one of the defining moments of O'Flynn's career. O'Flynn continued to perform and record music until his death on March 14, 2018, at the age of 72. His legacy as one of the greatest uilleann pipers of all time is secure, and his influence on traditional Irish music will be felt for generations to come.More....
