Role:EnsemblePeriod:ClassicalRomanticGenre:ChamberThe Arion Trio is a classical music ensemble consisting of three talented musicians: violinist Jacques Israelievitch, cellist Winona Zelenka, and pianist Jamie Parker. The trio was formed in 2014 and has since become one of the most sought-after chamber music groups in Canada. Jacques Israelievitch was born in Cannes, France in 1948. He began playing the violin at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Paris Conservatory and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. In 1972, he joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as its concertmaster, a position he held for over 20 years. During his time with the orchestra, he also performed as a soloist with many other orchestras around the world. Israelievitch was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he performed. Winona Zelenka was born in Toronto, Canada in 1964. She began playing the cello at the age of nine and went on to study at the University of Toronto and the Juilliard School. She has performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. Zelenka is also an accomplished chamber musician and has performed with many ensembles, including the Gryphon Trio and the Canadian Chamber Ensemble. Jamie Parker was born in Edmonton, Canada in 1967. He began playing the piano at the age of four and went on to study at the University of British Columbia and the Juilliard School. He has performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Parker is also a sought-after chamber musician and has performed with many ensembles, including the Gryphon Trio and the New Orford String Quartet. The Arion Trio was formed in 2014 when Israelievitch, Zelenka, and Parker decided to join forces and create a new chamber music ensemble. The trio takes its name from the Greek mythological figure Arion, who was known for his musical talent. The trio's repertoire includes works by many of the great composers of classical music, including Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert. Since its formation, the Arion Trio has performed at many of the top concert halls in Canada, including the Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. The trio has also performed at many international music festivals, including the Festival de Lanaudière in Quebec and the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Mexico. One of the highlights of the Arion Trio's career was their performance at the 2017 Ottawa Chamberfest. The trio performed a program of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert to a sold-out audience. The performance was widely praised by critics, who noted the trio's impeccable technique and emotional depth. The Arion Trio has also been recognized for their outstanding musicianship with several awards and honors. In 2016, the trio was awarded the Virginia Parker Prize by the Canada Council for the Arts. The prize is awarded annually to a Canadian musician or ensemble who has demonstrated outstanding talent and achievement in classical music. The trio was also nominated for a Juno Award in 2018 for their album "Trios from Our Homelands," which features works by Canadian composers. In addition to their performances and awards, the Arion Trio is also committed to music education and outreach.More....
