He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father, Bela Sztankovits Sr., was a well-known violinist and conductor, and his mother, Maria Sztankovits, was a pianist and music teacher. From a young age, Bela showed a natural talent for music and began studying piano with his mother. He quickly progressed and by the age of 10, he was accepted into the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he studied under the renowned pianist and composer, Zoltan Kodaly. During his time at the academy, Bela developed a deep love for classical music and began composing his own pieces. He also began performing in public, and his talent was quickly recognized by audiences and critics alike. In 1945, he won first prize in the Hungarian National Piano Competition, which launched his career as a professional musician. Over the next few years, Bela continued to perform and compose, and his reputation as a talented pianist and composer grew. In 1950, he was awarded the prestigious Kossuth Prize, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an artist in Hungary. In 1956, Bela and his family fled Hungary during the Hungarian Revolution and settled in the United States. He continued to perform and compose, and his talent was quickly recognized by American audiences. In 1958, he made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City, which was a major milestone in his career. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Bela continued to perform and compose, and he became known for his virtuosic piano playing and his innovative compositions. He also began teaching at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he mentored many young pianists who went on to have successful careers in music. In 1980, Bela was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary, which is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a Hungarian citizen. He continued to perform and compose until his death on December 31, 1994, at the age of 67.
