Role:ComposerBirth:1806Death:1896Gilbert Duprez was a French tenor and composer who was born on December 6, 1806, in Paris, France. He was the son of a famous tenor, Charles Duprez, who was also a singing teacher. Gilbert Duprez showed an early interest in music and began studying singing with his father at a young age. Duprez made his debut as a singer in 1825 at the age of 19, performing in the opera "La dame blanche" by François-Adrien Boieldieu. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented tenor and began performing in operas throughout France and Italy. In 1837, Duprez made a significant contribution to the development of opera when he introduced the technique of singing high notes in a full voice, rather than using falsetto. This technique, known as the "chest voice," allowed tenors to sing high notes with greater power and clarity, and it became a standard technique in opera singing. Duprez's most famous role was that of Arnold in Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera "William Tell." He performed this role in the premiere of the opera in Paris in 1829 and received critical acclaim for his performance. He also performed in other operas by Meyerbeer, including "Les Huguenots" and "Robert le diable." In addition to his career as a singer, Duprez was also a composer. He wrote several operas, including "La Reine de Chypre," which premiered in Paris in 1841. The opera was a success and was performed throughout Europe. Duprez continued to perform and compose throughout his career, and he was recognized as one of the leading tenors of his time. He retired from singing in 1851 and focused on composing and teaching singing. He died on September 23, 1896, in Paris, France. Duprez's contributions to opera singing and his successful career as a singer and composer have made him an important figure in the history of classical music. His legacy continues to influence opera singers and composers today.More....
