John Lord was a British musician and composer who was best known for his work as the keyboardist and co-founder of the legendary rock band Deep Purple. Born on June 9, 1941, in Leicester, England, Lord showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He was classically trained and studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Lord's early career was focused on classical music, and he worked as a session musician and arranger for various artists and orchestras. He also composed music for film and television, including the score for the 1969 film "The Last Rebel." However, it was his work with Deep Purple that would make him a household name. Lord co-founded Deep Purple in 1968 with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, drummer Ian Paice, bassist Nick Simper, and vocalist Rod Evans. The band's early sound was heavily influenced by blues and psychedelic rock, but they quickly developed a unique style that blended hard rock, classical music, and progressive rock. Lord's keyboard playing was a key element of the band's sound, and he was known for his use of the Hammond organ and other keyboard instruments. Deep Purple's breakthrough came in 1970 with the release of their album "Deep Purple in Rock," which featured the hit single "Black Night." The album was a critical and commercial success, and it established the band as one of the leading acts in the hard rock genre. Lord's contributions to the album were particularly notable, and his keyboard playing was praised for its virtuosity and creativity. Over the next few years, Deep Purple continued to release successful albums and tour extensively. Lord's keyboard playing remained a key element of the band's sound, and he was known for his improvisational skills and his ability to blend classical and rock music. Some of his most notable performances with the band include his solos on the songs "Highway Star" and "Lazy." In addition to his work with Deep Purple, Lord also pursued a solo career and collaborated with other musicians. He released several solo albums, including "Sarabande" in 1976 and "Before I Forget" in 1982. He also worked with other artists, including Whitesnake, George Harrison, and David Gilmour. Lord's contributions to music were recognized with several awards and honors throughout his career. In 2010, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple. He was also awarded the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2002 and the Classic Rock Roll of Honour Award for Innovator in 2011. Sadly, Lord passed away on July 16, 2012, at the age of 71.
